Fact Sheet #2 - May 3, 2010

MESSAGE FROM THE COMMISSIONER – DAVE NOLAN 812-849-4442; dave@cpainbluejeans.com

Hey gang.  We are off and running with another softball season.  Hope all of you have had a good start.  As you may already have noticed, the Facts Sheet is coming to you in a more concise format.  In addition, it is our intention to send out Facts Sheets on the following schedule: February 15, April 15, June 15, August 15, October 15 and December 15.  The Facts Sheets will be sent to you electronically unless you request a mailed version.  In between the Fact Sheets, we ask that you look to the Indiana ASA websites for updated information or contact the appropriate Indiana ASA representative listed below for more information.  A few things to keep in mind as we approach the month of May:

ADULT (INDIANA) NATIONAL QUALIFIERS – If you would like to host a national qualifier we have simplified the process.  Basically just let us know if you would like to host, dates, and sanction the tournament.  No assessment fees.  I would like to see our adult teams have as      many   opportunities to advance as possible.

TEAM REGISTRATIONS - Team registrations are beginning to roll in.  Please let me know if you need any help with the registration process.  Remember Cindy handles the JO team and individual registrations, the rest come to me.

APPRECIATIONS - Thanks to all for making our March convention an excellent event. We got a lot of great comments on having a one day event, earlier starting time for the banquet, and especially for the wonderful tribute to Wayne by Mike Ropp.  A lot of work was done by Bob Waters, Ron Summers, Cindy Inman and Mick Renneisen.  I appreciate everybody making the event memorable.  Next year’s event will be in Bloomington.  More to come on the details at a later date.

Thanks to Steve Boone and Butch Lehman for coordinating the Dudley Challenge.  Adult teams have requested more events for years. This event is growing.  Please advise your teams to get involved.

WEBSITES - Currently Mick and I are working on possible changes and a consistent format for our four web sites.  We have looked at several models at this point.  Hopefully we can make them more user-friendly and informative.  If you have ideas for the web sites, let us know.

ASA REPRESENTATIVE ASSIGNMENTS - Bob and Butch are finalizing the ASA rep list for this     summer’s tournaments.  Please help them out if you can.

FIELD OWNER’S INSURANCE - Commissioner Nolan has mailed all of the certificates of insurance         that he has received.  If you applied for the insurance, and have not received your certificates yet,    give Mick or Dave a call.

JUNIOR OLYMPIC PROGRAM – CINDY INMAN 765-744-5460; jocomm@aol.com

State JO Commissioner, Cindy Inman, continues to manage all aspects of the Indiana ASA JO program.  Please send all JO individual and team registration directly to Cindy.  Attached is a list of the 2010 JO Tournaments.

ADULT FAST PITCH SOFTBALL NEWS

At the December 2009 and March 2010 meetings of the Indiana ASA Executive Board the “Fast Pitch Committee” was authorized to implement changes to the Fast Pitch game that were supported by the Fast Pitch Task Force (10/24/2009), the Fast Pitch Committee, and which were reasonable in supporting growth and sustaining play in the Men’s Fast Pitch game.  These changes are the first since Pitcher classifications were established in 1999.  These changes include:

  • All participants from the 2009 rosters of the following four (4) teams shall be listed on an Indiana ASA Fast Pitch Restricted player list and be posted on our web site.  Any team comprised of more than one (1) pitcher, or a combination of one (1) pitcher and three (3) or more position players, or a total of four (4) or more players from the restricted player list shall be ineligible to compete at the Men’s Class C (or below) Fast Pitch level in Indiana.  This shall not affect eligibility for the ASA Men’s Class C National Championship Finals.

                                                                                               Anderson Lawmen, Anderson
                                                                                                D. C. Current, Bremen
                                                                                                Duncan Outlaws, Elkhart
                                                                                                Goshen Gators, Goshen
  • All participants from the 2009 roster of the Diamonds In The Rough, Chesterfield Men’s Class D Fast Pitch State Championship team shall be required to compete at the Class C level of play their next competing season.  These participants’ names shall be listed on an Indiana ASA Fast Pitch Restricted player list and posted on our web site.

  • A Men’s Class D Fast Pitch team shall be defined as:

a.      A team whose pitchers have never pitched above the Class D level, or

b.      Whose pitchers have been re-classified to the Class D level.

Furthermore, any position player who has competed above the Class D level who chooses to pitch at the Class D level may pitch only and shall not be allowed to bat.

  • Any legal Men’s Class D Fast Pitch team may by paying another $25 team registration fee and competing with an identical roster is eligible to compete in the Men’s Class C Fast Pitch State Tournament.
  • Men’s Fast Pitch State Tournaments shall be three-game guarantee format.  Entry fees will increase accordingly, $350 for C, $325 for D.
  • Men’s Fast Pitch State Tournaments shall be drawn by protecting teams from the same regions / leagues, then seeded for best possible play.
  • Site without permanent or temporary fences installed between 245 – 260 feet shall not be considered to host a Men’s Fast Pitch State Tournaments.
  • State Tournament play shall begin on Friday evening (7 or 7:30 p.m.) with local teams playing if possible the first round, then a second round at 9 or 9:30 p.m.  The goal is to schedule games on two-hour intervals, so that scheduling is more realistic and return no more than four teams and perhaps as few as one game, two if needed on Sunday.  This allows the host to deal with inclement weather.
  • The preferred softball for Indiana ASA Men’s Fast Pitch is the Worth Dream Seam Leather Optic Yellow softball with a cork core.
  • In order to make the Men’s Fast Pitch Tournaments more appealing to Indiana ASA Umpires it was proposed that Managers encourage their players to hustle on and off the field, and take charge of and responsibility for their players conduct.  In the past it has been tough to contract umpires for these events.

State Tournament Play is right around the calendar corner.  Please refer to our web site: www.indiana-asa.org for complete details.
